Social Issues
1. Pro Life Period
2. Marriage as defined between a Man & Woman
3. Prayer or Bible Reading Anywhere and Time you choose including any Public Building or Place.
4. Freedom for Ministers to Preach from the Bible without Fear of losing Tax Status due to what they say or read from the Bible.
These are the basic issues facing many of us and will discuss more as they arise.

I like almost everything Van says with a few minor refinements, that I would urge Van to consider:
1. Per 10th ammendment, marriage could be a right retained by the people that the state choses to stay out of. If the state must become involved in it, then it cannot discriminate. The equal protection clause of the 14th ammendment is not meant to give the Judicial branch of Federal government the power to legislate from the bench, but should be viewed as an important ability for one branch of Federal government to limit the scope of the rest of government through nullification. While it may be permissible to allow individuals the “right” to discriminate, it is not within the Article 1 section 8 scope of Federal government’s enumerated powers (nor within the state’s power per 10th ammendment) to use its monies to discriminate. Individuals have the “right” to discriminate but government’s “right” to do so should be strictly limited.
2. The first ammendment gaurantees religious freedom, but prevents government for respecting an establishment of religion. I agree with #4, but disagree somewhat with #3. Public buildings shall endeavor to remain neutral and secular.

I think this Republican primary will be interesting, but I have to say I disgree with the direction in which the GOP is heading. As a pro-business but socially liberal Republican, I increasingly find myself at odds with the growing number of conservative candidates. Mr. Van Steenwyk, I actually came across your web site while deciding for whom I’m going to vote in the primaries, and I have to say that I don’t feel that these “conservative” social positions are in line with the original Republican party principles. As Republicans, we should be in favor of keeping the govt. as limited as possible and that includes when dealing with our personal lives. I believe that if two men or two women truly love eachother, then they should be able to get married. Also, several religions including some Lutheran churches, some Methodist groups, the Episcopal church, and Reformed Judaism perform same-sex union/marriage ceremonies. Their religious liberty should be as respected as the conservative religions. Moreover, what a woman does with her body in the 1st trimester is her business not the govt’s (even tho I too am personally against abortion and believe it is morally wrong). I wish you luck with your campaign but hope that you’d consider focusing on the real economic issues rather than social issues with which the govt. shouldn’t be involved.
